چکیده

Recently, Macdonald et. al. showed that many algorithmic problems for finitely generated nilpotent groups including computation of normal forms, the subgroup membership problem, the conjugacy problem, and computation of subgroup presentations can be done in LOGSPACE. Here we follow their approach and show that all these problems are complete for the uniform circuit class TC0 – uniformly for all r-generated nilpotent groups of class at most c for fixed r and c. In order to solve these problems in TC0, we show that the unary version of the extended gcd problem (compute greatest common divisors and express them as linear combinations) is in TC0. Moreover, if we allow a certain binary representation of the inputs, then the word problem and computation of normal forms is still in uniform TC0, while all the other problems we examine are shown to be TC0-Turing reducible to the binary extended gcd problem.

Algorithmic Meta Theorems for Circuit Classes of Constant and Logarithmic Depth

An algorithmic meta theorem for a logic and a class C of structures states that all problems expressible in this logic can be solved efficiently for inputs from C. The prime example is Courcelle’s Theorem, which states that monadic second-order (mso) definable problems are linear-time solvable on graphs of bounded tree width. We contribute new algorithmic meta theorems, which state that mso-def...

The isomorphism problem for residually torsion-free nilpotent groups

Both the conjugacy and isomorphism problems for finitely generated nilpotent groups are recursively solvable. In some recent work, the first author, with a tiny modification of work in the second author’s thesis, proved that the conjugacy problem for finitely presented, residually torsion-free nilpotent groups is recursively unsolvable. Here we complete the algorithmic picture by proving that t...

Logspace and compressed-word computations in nilpotent groups

For finitely generated nilpotent groups, we employ Mal’cev coordinates to solve several classical algorithmic problems efficiently. Computation of normal forms, the membership problem, the conjugacy problem, and computation of presentations for subgroups are solved using only logarithmic space and, simultaneously, in quasilinear time. Compressed-word versions of these problems, in which each in...
